John Marshall (Managing Director)

John has been managing director of FERM for the past 28 years.  In that time he has been a Senior Manager to the Investment Bank Capel Court, Assistant Actuary to Business Men’s Assurance, Adjunct Professor to Sturt University (specialist areas being personal finance and corporate investments) and Associate Professor to Curtin University (specialist areas in superannuation mathematics, life interests and economics) .

 

In FERM, John has been responsible for:

·         Auditing financial instruments including derivatives, and acting as an “expert” in court cases.

·         The valuation of investment and superannuation portfolios.

·         Taxation advice to the Australian Government on risk hedging using futures, options and exotic combinations and the definition of debt versus equity for tax purposes.

·         Designing foreign exchange hedge arrangements using exotic options, for exporters/importers to effectively manage currency and interest rate risk. Advising on Value at Risk and stress testing using Monte Carlo analysis.

·         Training in the Mathematics of Derivatives and Risk Modeling, both within Australia and overseas.

·         The valuation of livestock and other farm assets for settlement in legal disputes.

·         Auditing mortgage calculations.

·         The valuation of renewable energy projects.

·         The valuation of interests in property.  This may involve exotic forms such as property derivatives, property hybrids and direct property interests.

John is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, a CPA, BCom (Accountancy), MEc, ASIA. He has co-authored two books   in money, loan and bond market mathematics and authored two books in financial mathematics.

John has advised such companies as Westpac, CBA, St George Bank, Barclays, Toyota, Mistral Energy and run courses internationally for Euromoney, and domestically for WA Treasury,  The Australian Treasury, Barclays, CBA and St George Bank.  He was quoted by Euromoney as being in “the top three world trainers in financial mathematics.”

 

Marilyn Rainier (Executive Assistant)

 

Our executive assistant, Marilyn Rainier, holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English and Comparative Literature and a Graduate Diploma in Education.  While at Murdoch University, she received the Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence, awarded to the top two per cent of graduates in each faculty.  At Edith Cowan University, she was awarded an Oustanding teaching assessment grade. 

 

 Marilyn has worked as an English teacher in Western Australia for 15 years.  She also worked for 18 years as a Court Reporter for the High Court of Australia, and for the Supreme Court, the District Court, the Family Court, and the Industrial Commission in Western Australia.  Both of these occupations require a high level of expertise in the English language and associated proofreading and editing skills.  Marilyn is also the overseas director of the Play Plus Group in Hong Kong and is on the fundraising committee for Zonta International.    

 

Juan Luong (Actuarial/IT Analyst)

Juan is at the cutting edge of systems and web design and development.  His expertise is enhanced by his actuarial studies, his practical problem solving ability and his honest, courteous and committed work ethic.
